Is This Actually Becoming Mandatory Soon?

From 1 March 2027, under Victoria’s Gas Substitution Roadmap, gas hot water systems in existing Victorian homes must be replaced with an efficient electric alternative, such as a heat pump, once that system reaches end of life. This isn’t a retrospective mandate forcing anyone to rip out a working system early, but it does mean that a gas hot water system installed today is very likely being replaced with an electric one at its next changeover regardless of what happens between now and then.
