Previously, an AlphaESS hybrid system on single-phase power topped out at a 5kW inverter, fine for a modest solar and battery setup, but a real ceiling for anyone wanting to run a large panel array on single-phase power while staying with AlphaESS specifically. The new 10kW single-phase hybrid option removes that ceiling, matching what Victoria’s distributors already permit on single-phase connections and what other brands, Sungrow’s SH10RS among them, have already offered. We’re confirming the exact PV input specification directly with AlphaESS before publishing a specific figure, since it’s a newly released model, but the headline change, double the inverter capacity within AlphaESS’s own single-phase range, is real and available now.
Why This Matters More Than a Bigger Number
A bigger inverter isn’t just about a bigger solar array, it changes what your system can actually do day to day.
Household loads have grown. A heat pump hot water system, reverse-cycle heating and cooling, and EV charging all draw meaningfully more than the loads a 5kW single-phase system was originally sized around. A 10kW inverter gives a single-phase home the headroom to size solar and battery against all of that combined, rather than picking which one appliance gets priority.
Doesn’t Victoria’s 5kW Export Limit Cap This Anyway?
The export limit caps what you send to the grid, not what your system can generate or what your household can use.
CitiPower, Powercor, Jemena, AusNet Services and United Energy all apply the same standard: a single-phase connection can export a maximum of 5kW to the grid at any given moment. That’s specifically an export limit, enforced by the inverter throttling surplus once the threshold is reached, it doesn’t cap your inverter’s capacity or your panel array. A bigger inverter still means more usable generation across the day and more capacity to run large loads directly from solar, and, paired with a battery, somewhere for that extra generation to go instead of being throttled at the limit. Does This Replace the Need for Three-Phase Power?
For AlphaESS customers specifically, this removes a reason that previously pushed some toward it.
Upgrading from single-phase to three-phase power is a genuine cost and disruption, a distributor application, switchboard work, and in some cases trenching, before a single panel goes up. Larger single-phase hybrid inverters from other brands have been available for a while, so this isn’t a first for the market, but it does mean AlphaESS customers no longer face a trade-off between staying with AlphaESS and getting a genuinely large single-phase system. Three-phase still makes sense for homes wanting the fastest available EV charging or running heavy three-phase equipment, but for households specifically wanting a bigger AlphaESS system, single-phase no longer means settling for a smaller one.

Does a bigger inverter mean I need a bigger panel array too?
Not necessarily in the same ratio. A bigger inverter allows for a bigger panel array, but the right size for your roof depends on orientation, shading, and your household’s actual usage.
