It brings AlphaESS in line with the 10kW sin­gle-phase invert­er ceil­ing Vic­to­ri­a’s dis­trib­u­tors already allow, and with oth­er sin­gle-phase hybrid options already on the mar­ket, Sun­grow’s SH10RS being a well-estab­lished exam­ple. For any­one specif­i­cal­ly want­i­ng to stay with­in the AlphaESS ecosys­tem, bat­tery, app, and war­ran­ty all from one man­u­fac­tur­er, this clos­es a real gap that pre­vi­ous­ly meant either accept­ing a small­er AlphaESS sys­tem or mix­ing brands to get a big­ger one.

What’s Actu­al­ly Changed

The sin­gle-phase hybrid ceil­ing has effec­tive­ly doubled.

Pre­vi­ous­ly, an AlphaESS hybrid sys­tem on sin­gle-phase pow­er topped out at a 5kW invert­er, fine for a mod­est solar and bat­tery set­up, but a real ceil­ing for any­one want­i­ng to run a large pan­el array on sin­gle-phase pow­er while stay­ing with AlphaESS specif­i­cal­ly. The new 10kW sin­gle-phase hybrid option removes that ceil­ing, match­ing what Vic­to­ri­a’s dis­trib­u­tors already per­mit on sin­gle-phase con­nec­tions and what oth­er brands, Sun­grow’s SH10RS among them, have already offered. We’re con­firm­ing the exact PV input spec­i­fi­ca­tion direct­ly with AlphaESS before pub­lish­ing a spe­cif­ic fig­ure, since it’s a new­ly released mod­el, but the head­line change, dou­ble the invert­er capac­i­ty with­in AlphaESS’s own sin­gle-phase range, is real and avail­able now.

Why This Mat­ters More Than a Big­ger Number

A big­ger invert­er isn’t just about a big­ger solar array, it changes what your sys­tem can actu­al­ly do day to day.

House­hold loads have grown. A heat pump hot water sys­tem, reverse-cycle heat­ing and cool­ing, and EV charg­ing all draw mean­ing­ful­ly more than the loads a 5kW sin­gle-phase sys­tem was orig­i­nal­ly sized around. A 10kW invert­er gives a sin­gle-phase home the head­room to size solar and bat­tery against all of that com­bined, rather than pick­ing which one appli­ance gets priority.

Does­n’t Vic­to­ri­a’s 5kW Export Lim­it Cap This Anyway?

The export lim­it caps what you send to the grid, not what your sys­tem can gen­er­ate or what your house­hold can use.

CitiPow­er, Pow­er­cor, Jeme­na, Aus­Net Ser­vices and Unit­ed Ener­gy all apply the same stan­dard: a sin­gle-phase con­nec­tion can export a max­i­mum of 5kW to the grid at any giv­en moment. That’s specif­i­cal­ly an export lim­it, enforced by the invert­er throt­tling sur­plus once the thresh­old is reached, it does­n’t cap your invert­er’s capac­i­ty or your pan­el array. A big­ger invert­er still means more usable gen­er­a­tion across the day and more capac­i­ty to run large loads direct­ly from solar, and, paired with a bat­tery, some­where for that extra gen­er­a­tion to go instead of being throt­tled at the lim­it. Export­ed solar is typ­i­cal­ly worth only a small frac­tion of what grid pow­er costs to buy back at night, so a big­ger sys­tem paired with stor­age, the case for which is cov­ered in our bat­tery ROI guide, cap­tures more of that gap rather than los­ing it at the export limit.

Does This Replace the Need for Three-Phase Power?

For AlphaESS cus­tomers specif­i­cal­ly, this removes a rea­son that pre­vi­ous­ly pushed some toward it.

Upgrad­ing from sin­gle-phase to three-phase pow­er is a gen­uine cost and dis­rup­tion, a dis­trib­u­tor appli­ca­tion, switch­board work, and in some cas­es trench­ing, before a sin­gle pan­el goes up. Larg­er sin­gle-phase hybrid invert­ers from oth­er brands have been avail­able for a while, so this isn’t a first for the mar­ket, but it does mean AlphaESS cus­tomers no longer face a trade-off between stay­ing with AlphaESS and get­ting a gen­uine­ly large sin­gle-phase sys­tem. Three-phase still makes sense for homes want­i­ng the fastest avail­able EV charg­ing or run­ning heavy three-phase equip­ment, but for house­holds specif­i­cal­ly want­i­ng a big­ger AlphaESS sys­tem, sin­gle-phase no longer means set­tling for a small­er one.

It’s avail­able for new solar and bat­tery instal­la­tions, and may suit some upgrade sce­nar­ios depend­ing on your exist­ing equip­ment. Your installer can con­firm what’s pos­si­ble for your spe­cif­ic setup.

Will I get in trou­ble for hav­ing a big­ger invert­er than my export limit?

No. Export lim­it­ing is con­fig­ured in soft­ware by your installer and enforced auto­mat­i­cal­ly, your sys­tem gen­er­ates and uses pow­er nor­mal­ly, it sim­ply throt­tles what’s sent to the grid once the 5kW thresh­old is reached.

Does a big­ger invert­er mean I need a big­ger pan­el array too?

Not nec­es­sar­i­ly in the same ratio. A big­ger invert­er allows for a big­ger pan­el array, but the right size for your roof depends on ori­en­ta­tion, shad­ing, and your house­hold’s actu­al usage.

Do I need to upgrade my switch­board for a 10kW sin­gle-phase inverter?

Some­times, depend­ing on your home­’s exist­ing set­up. It’s a nor­mal part of the assess­ment and gen­er­al­ly far less involved than a full three-phase upgrade.
